On the Ideology of the Music Video: Hypercathected Hyperreality as Hyperdecadent Hyperfantasy

Image
A deliberately provocative prelude in images. Kubrick's "The Shining". Traversal of the fantasy as unbearable "nightmare":

"The whole of modern industry, even though it does not literally resort to such exchanges, rests on a form of trade mediated by the sign of an inert currency that neutralizes the nature of the objects being exchanged. It thus rests on a simulacrum of this kind of trade - a simulacrum that depends on the resources of the available labour force, and thus on a living currency that already exists, even though it is not openly admitted as such."
-Pierre Klossowski, "Living Currency"

In this scene from Kubrick's great masterpiece of horror, "The Shining" (soon due for a sequel that will undoubtedly disappoint us), the white, male, heterosexual subject comes to grief over his identification with the ultimate aggressive fantasy in which he destroys the very conjugal situation that ensures his security and identity as …

"Through this rediscovery of himself by himself, the bondsman realizes that it is precisely in his work wherein he seemed to have only an alienated existence that he acquires a mind of his own. For this reflection, the two moments of fear and service as such, as also that of formative activity, are necessary, both being at the same time in a universal mode. Without the discipline of service and obedience, fear remains at the formal stage, and does not extend to the known real world of existence. Without the formative activity, fear remains inward and mute, and consciousness does not become explicitly for itself." -GWF Hegel, Phenomenology of Spirit

"Whoever wishes to escape is obliged to queue at the narrow slots that serve as exits, and to pay a ransom."

"Puppets" by Truth (Tunnidge Remix): A Review

Image
If there is a single producer who sums up the most "authentic" current of UK dubstep, it is Tunnidge, known for his dark, throbbing, heady vibes as well as for his visual art (his deft, pared-down draftsmanship decorates -- in the form of facial portraits of each individual artists, almost like caricatures -- all of the records put out by the infamous Deep Medi label). The dystopianism of this sort of "dark" dubstep embodies not only the existential torture of the contemporary late capitalist subject, enslaved by market forces, but also the original spirit of dub as such, which is religious in nature. With this track, we have a kind of brilliant metacommentary on the situation of contemporary music in general (which I have previously characterized as "Stalinist", in the sense of soul-engineering, brainwashing, etc), which is not so different from that of mass-media in general. A vocal sample, presumably from some obscure science fiction film which I have…
